With the announcement last week of their Made by Google hardware, Google is making a strong push into hardware. To further show off their new hardware array the Google pop-up shop is scheduled to open October 20th in New York.
The Made by Google hardware being shown off includes the new Pixel smartphone, home speaker, VR headset and WiFi home router. This is not the first time Google has toyed with the idea of a retail location. With Google Glass, there were select locations to show off the tech and allow people to get a hands-on. These previous locations mostly focused on promoting exposure to new technology rather than retail.
As previously noted on TGF the Google Pixel smartphone is serious addition to the smartphone market that could see big sales. Anticipated big sales requires a good amount of marketing. Without a retail spot, however, Google is at a disadvantage over Apple or Microsoft in showing off hardware. This pop-up shop could be a happy medium for the company to show off new hardware with an event location to drive the die-hards and curious alike. The shop is also showing off Daydream the new VR headset designed for personal games and cinema. The Pixel is the first Daydream enabled smartphone which hopes to provide a greater VR experience using smartphone technology.
The Made by Google opens up at 96 Spring Street on October 20th.
