PlayStation 4's Launch Delays and HDMI Capture

It is hard to believe that the new console generation is creeping up quickly. The PlayStation 4 is set to release in the U.S. on November 15, 2013 with a slew of retail launch titles, and its fair share of downloadable content and games. The PlayStation 4 is on the brink of release and with it, it is no surprise that there might be some delays.

The first delay was probably the biggest, with Sony announcing that the PlayStation 4 would not release in Japan until February of 2014. It is hard to understand why of all places to delay the launch of its new console; Sony would make it be Japan, which is where Sony reigns supreme.

There was speculation that it was due to the fact that Sony had already won the console war in Japan due to the fact that it will easily out sell the Xbox One there. Sony possibly wanted to conserve its supply for the upcoming release in territories where Xbox One is an adversary like the United States and United Kingdom. However, according to Sony’s Senior Vice President Masayasu Ito, Sony is delaying the launch of the PlayStation 4 in Japan due to the low amount of Japanese games that will be available at launch. He added that as of now, Japanese third-party developers are currently so heavily focused on the PlayStation Vita that delaying the launch will allow third-party developers to get more of a chance to work on some PS4 launch titles.

Another delay that has hit PS4 is the delay of the HDMI capture feature will not be available at launch and will be added through a patch after the newest Sony console has launched. There is word that the PS4 can utilize the Xbox One’s HDMI port to capture although it has been stated by Microsoft that it is not recommended. Sony assures consumers that there will be HDMI capture support; it just will not be available at the time of launch. There currently is no release for this patch that will create the HDMI support but it is definitely a feature many gamers will utilize when it becomes available.
