What We Played | August 20 – 26

This is a weekly segment where we share what games we are currently playing for our readers to get to know us a bit better. Said games can range from retro to current and from casual to FPS games. If we’re playing it, we’ll share it. Please feel free to comment with what you’re playing or your opinions on the games that we’re involved with.

Nick P: I’ve been playing the Ghost Recon Online beta. For anyone familiar with F2P shooters, GRO offers a different change of pace by emphasizing position-based approaches to defeating the enemy. There are plenty of suspenseful moments that resemble an Old West shootout or a paintball match, but there are occasional all-out firefights as well. I’m also particularly impressed by the deep level-up system and stat-tracking capabilities. GRO is shaping up to be a worthy addition to the F2P market. (I’ll be writing a GRO beta impressions article next!)

Matthew: The New Super Mario Bros. 2! Coins for days! Coins for days!

Jeff: Gran Turismo 5 is a pretty big game, but I’m actually pretty motivated to get as many cars as I can. The driving feels much tighter than Gran Turismo 4, and the cockpit view is much more comfortable. The work that Polyphony put into GT5 really shows. I also finished Spider-Man 3, out of some strange obligation to complete all 42 or so missions. Oddly, the Lizard subplot is very similar to the plot of both The Amazing Spider-Man film and game. Finally, I finished Portal 2 and immediately replayed it in Developer Commentary mode. It’s a lot of fun to listen to some of the most talented designers in the industry talk about how to make their game the most polished, intuitive, and fun product they can make.

Joel: Finally completed Mass Effect 3 and have been continuing to play Diablo 3 as a Monk. As well as playing Persona 3 on my Vita.

Logan: Guild Wars 2 headstart began this weekend so it has been nonstop Guild Wars for me! It’s been amazing and the problems it has had have been so small in comparison to other MMO launches that it is just awesome how well ArenaNet has done so far. Love the game and am getting the Collector’s Edition here on Tuesday. Super stoked for that.

Jen: Had a little bit of playtime with SWTOR but the majority of my gaming was with Transformers: Fall of Cybertron. Sadly, my trip to Seattle for PAX was fast forward thanks to a pending hurricane/tropical storm, so my time with FoC was cut short. I want to play more!

Jake: While everyone is busy with their fancy Guild Wars 2, I’m preparing for the Mists of Pandaria launch. Recruited one character to 80, about to start another. Free level 80 monk, here I come!

Enis: Started my first run through of Borderlands as a Hunter. Love it! Finished the game last night and starting all of the DLC today. Played some Mass Effect 3 with John, had a blast. Can’t wait for the Leviathan DLC to come out Tuesday!
