Beamdog announced Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition is coming on April 11.

The game is a remaster of 1999’s Planescape: Torment. Set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, the game is often remembered for its branching story and focus on dialog over combat. Players take on the role of The Nameless One, an immortal being trying to discover why he can’t die. Beamdog worked to bring the classic game into the modern era. In addition to updated 4K visuals and widescreen support, minor gameplay tweaks are being made. New features such as a combat log, quick looting, and area zoom are being added according to the game’s website.

Chris Avellone, lead designer on Planescape: Torment, is working with Beamdog on the remaster. In addition to his work on Planescape, Avellone worked on other classic role-playing games such as Fallout 2 and was a co-founder of Obsidian Entertainment. Avellone suggested gameplay updates, bug fixes and other enhancements to the Beamdog team. “Beamdog has worked hard to ensure the feel and tone of the Enhanced Edition matches the original game,” said Avellone in a press release. “At the same time, they’ve also taken advantage of current generation technology to allow for improvements to the interface and feel – it’s the best way to play Planescape: Torment, hands-down.”

Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition Gameplay

Despite its revered status, Planescape: Torment never received an official sequel. A spiritual successor, Torment: Tides of Numenara, was released in February on consoles and PC. Developed by Wasteland 2 dev inXile Entertainment, it features only thematic links to the first game. Avellone consulted on gameplay systems and designed a companion character for the game.

Beamdog is no stranger to classic D&D games. The company remastered both games in the Baldur’s Gate series as well as the first Icewind Dale game. The company was founded by former BioWare employees and has worked to update and modernize classic role-playing games. Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition will be available on PC, Mac, Linux, and iOS and Android tablets. The PC version will run $19.99 while the tablet version will be available for $10.
