PAX Prime 2012 | Oculus Rift

The Oculus Rift is planning to take virtual reality into a whole new different level. When you think VR, some retro gamers might have flash backs to Nintendo’s Virtual Boy that was released back in 1995. It seems over the years, no one has really gotten VR gaming right but the Oculus Rift has given us hope.

Created by Palmer Luckey, the Oculus Rift is a head-mounted display that allows the wearer to experience a 90 degree horizontal view and a 110 diagonal view. The resolution is 640×800 per eye and runs on the PC.

I had the chance to try out the Oculus Rift while at PAX Prime. First off, I do get motion sickness with certain games on certain TVs, so this was a great chance to test how the VR world would affect someone that can get a queezy stomach easily.

The Oculus Rift is exteremely light. Even when you’re told the weight of it, it isn’t until you get the actual product in your hands that you beleieve that. It is amazing how they’re able to put that type of hardware into something that is so light and feels comfotable while wearing it.

The game that I tested with the Oculus Rift was DOOM 3: BFG Edition. Instead of instanly feeling a wave of nausea, I had more trouble with moving my head around to look instead of using the analog. All things considered, I’m glad that was my only issue, save for a slight disorientated feeling shortly after using the product. The Oculus Rift caused zero motion sickness for me and instead took me into the world of DOOM. I was able to look side to side as well as up and down as I took down those who wished me dead. The Oculus Rift does have promise to not only be in homes but perhaps to be in malls as mini arcades in the future. There is so much that can be done with this product and I for one am looking forward with what improvements are to come.
