Paper Mario has become a franchise with a strong following in the Nintendo community. The turn based battle systems and puzzle solving exploits have made the game series famous; now players can get back in on the 2-D action with Paper Mario Colour Splash.
Nintendo revealed Paper Mario Colour Splash in a Nintendo Direct address in March. Now, at E3, players have been given a full trailer. Paper Mario hasn’t been released on home console in a while, with the last one being Sticker Star on the 3DS. In 2007 fans played Super Paper Mario on the Wii and this latest iteration is coming to us on the Wii U. The gameplay so far sees reminiscent of other Paper Mario titles, most notably Sticker Star.
Mario is going on a quest to solve the mysterious draining of colour from the world, armed with a paint hammer he’s trying to bring back the land’s colour scheme. The paint hammer – it seems – is used both as a weapon and tool to solve puzzles. Fans can always trust a Paper Mario game to bring some interesting puzzle solving elements into the mix. The game is slated for release October 7th of this year.
People have not responded very well to the game, and after the trailer was posted to YouTube on the 15th, the video’s dislike bar already greatly outweighs the likes. Some people have even gone so far as to create a petition on Change.org to have the game cancelled, which is vaguely reminiscent of the Metroid: Federation Force debacle last year.
However, if I may editorialize for a moment – watch the video for yourself and decide without the prejudice of all the negativity on whether you think the game is worth your time.
Maybe keep in mind that Paper Mario has never really let fans down in the past.
