Overwatch at Gamescom: The Last Bastion and More

Overwatch

Blizzard’s presence at Gamescom 2016 was probably one of the most anticipated of the convention. All week Overwatch has been cranking out updates for the game and it came to a crescendo today with the reveal of the latest animated short The Last Bastion.

Let’s start by delving into the new information fans of the series have been receiving all week. Upcoming in the new season there will be changes to competitive mode which are pretty substantial. The way sudden death, ranking and skill tier placements work have all undergone a retooling. Thanks to a comment from Reddit user u/EroticDuckButter in the post Developer Update | Upcoming Season 2 Changes season two changes of competitive mode are outlined in full, with great detail and organization.

Blizzard has already started up a PTR on PC for the upcoming season to test how the new system will work; this also comes with hero nerfs, buffs and balances as well – meaning the potential end of Zenyatta’s reign of terror. There is a full list of patches in an update post on the PlayOverwatch boards. The main restructuring – it seems – is in the support vein to hopefully bring some other healers into viability for competitive play other than a constant stream of Lucios and Zenyattas.

Eichenwalde is the newest map coming to Overwatch sometime in the coming month, It’s a hybrid map of capture and escort. Eichenwalde is much more vertical than any map seen to date in Overwatch and according to the developers at Gamescom there are ramparts, hallways and courtyards to explore in this castle town. Judging from the game-play this map is pretty complex and there are a lot of potential flanking routes, so players will have to stay on their guard. This new map brings us to the big reveal for Overwatch and their new animated short The Last Bastion, which takes place in the forest near the ruined castle of Eichenwalde.

Overwatch

The short was heartwarming for sure, with a very Disney/Pixar vibe, it was a story of innocence, destruction and choices. Breathtaking visuals The Last Bastion was a great addition to an already impressive line up in the animation for Overwatch. But what unfortunately overshadowed the animation was the lack of any Sombra news. If you’ve seen previous posts here on TGF you know that Sombra has become a phenomenon among the fans of Overwatch. We all prayed to have some solace from the sleepless nights wondering “Quién es Sombra?” But Blizzard made no mention of her and as far as I could see there were no hidden messages or cryptic signs in the animated short or footage shown.

Let’s end on a positive note though! With release of Eichenwalde there will also be a new Legendary Reinhardt skin, which looks amazing. It’s based on the armour of Reinhardt’s mentor, Baldr and it’s got a righteous eagle of justice motif with a giant spiked hammer. So even if there was no Sombra news, there’s still that!

Overwatch

There is no word yet when season two, the new map and updates will be released but we here at TGF will die a thousand deaths before we let you go uninformed!
