E3 2012 | Nintendo: Wii U Price Will "Pleasantly Surprise"

Nintendo didn’t talk about pricing for their new console at E3, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t been thinking about it.In an IGN video interview, Nintendo of America‘s, Reggie Fils-Aime simply mentioned that “people will be pleasantly surprised.” He then goes on to talk about how Nintendo’s competitor’s opted to launch at a high price and cut the price little by little, while the original Wii was able to stay at its $249.99 launch price for nearly half a decade.

This comes on the heels of a story from Ubergizmo that UK retailers have already listed the Wii U at £279.85, which converts to about $431.83. Don’t hold these numbers too closely, though, as placeholders prices are common among retailers eager to accept pre-orders. Currently, GameStop has Wii U software listed at $99.99, which is absolutely a placeholder price. We’ll know more as the holidays approach, as Nintendo has stated that they hope for a late 2012 launch.
