In news, we totally were not expecting to pop up on a Tuesday; Netflix has ordered a 10 episode straight-to-series order of the comic series Umbrella Academy. The series, an adaption of the Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance) and Gabriel Ba’s graphic novel, is slated for a 2018 premier. With Comic Con coming later this month, we can expect to hear more details on the series.
Umbrella Academy is an Eisner Award winning graphic novel that follows a superhero family as they solve the mystery of their father’s death. Additionally they are trying to hold together despite their different personalities and powers. The characters are iconic and memorable, with a story that felt like a fresh and twisted take on how superheroes are typically portrayed.
Way will serve as executive producer on the series, with the pilot adapted from the comic series by Jeremy Slater. While Netflix has a strong stable of comic book properties already, Umbrella Academy offers something different. Umbrella Academy brings a unique take on the genre that will engage in audiences. Genre fans as well as those looking for something deeper will find aspects to enjoy from the story and characters.
The Dark Horse series has so far had only two volumes back in 2007 and 2008. Now is the perfect time to jump into the series before the 2018 series hits. For those of us that are fans we can start our dream casting now of Spaceboy, The Kraken, The Rumor, The White Violin, The Horror, Number Five, The Monocle, and The Séance. Personally 2018 can’t come soon enough!
