Stephen Curry has had a difficult road to being the NBA’s most valuable player and 2016 NBA Champion, and a brand new trailer for NBA 2K16 entitled, Stephen Curry: Beyond the Shadows, aims to tell you about that journey.
The trailer is only a minute long, and features some excellent narration from the critically acclaimed director Spike Lee. It takes you through the trials of Stephen Curry going to the relatively unknown college Davidson, being criticized as not a true point-guard that will succeed in the NBA, being drafted by the Golden State Warriors and finally, Curry defying all the odds holding the Larry O’Brien during the championship parade in Oakland.
It’s some masterful storytelling that only takes a minute to get its point across — NBA 2K16 wants to tell these kinds of stories with its MyPLAYER mode.
2K Sports is putting even more emphasis on their MyPLAYER mode in NBA 2K16. They announced earlier this year that Spike Lee will be directing the MyPlayer mode of NBA 2K16 and the marketing tagline the franchise is getting behind is, “Be the Story.”
If 2K Sports and Spike Lee can bring this caliber of storytelling to NBA 2K16 MyPLAYER, it would finally push the stagnant game mode to where it needs to be. The mode has spent so long focusing on endorsement deals it forgot what makes sports compelling — Stephen Curry’s story is what makes sports compelling.
