The Fable role playing game series may see a revival in a CCG form. Fable Fortune is going to walk the Kickstarter trail with Microsoft’s blessing.
The future seemed very bleak for the Fable series. Lionhead studios was shut down and Fable Legends was cancelled as a result. However, the series may live on in the form of a free-to-play collectible card game. Recently, Microsoft, who holds the rights to the Fable license, has granted Flaming Fowl Studios a license to use the Fable name, but the license is limited. On the Kickstarter page, the developers state: “To be clear, we haven’t been granted a license to the entire Fable franchise, Microsoft have retained these rights, but we have the creative freedom to continue developing Fortune as an independent studio.”
Fable Fortune is a collectible card game set in the Fable universe. The game promises to be steeped in the lore of the previous games. It will also feature the series’s trademark humor. The battles will take place in environments from the games. Players are tasked to complete the quests they choose before each match begins. The driving force behind the game’s quests is the morality system. Being able to choose between good and evil is a big staple of the Fable games, and drives the story line. Additionally, there will be a co-op mode that will allow players to team up with each other. Each player will build their own deck and their units will be shared between them.
Fable Fortune is being developed by Flaming Fowl Studios. The studio is comprised by ex-Lionhead developers. This bodes well for the project since the developers are already familiar with the Fable games and its story. As of writing, the Kickstarter has amassed a little over $24,000. The end goal is $365,385, and there is less than a month left to contribute. The game is planned to be released on PC and Xbox One, with mobile versions to follow at a later date.
