The Man Behind the Mask, Olympic Swordsman Who Played Darth Vader Dies at 89

Whether you knew who he was or whether you didn’t, you can’t failed to have seen the work of Bob Anderson. Formerly an Olympic fencer who represented England, Bob went on to work in Hollywood where he helped to craft some of the silver screens finest sword fights.

His CV included The Mark of Zorro, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lord of the Rings and most noticeably Star Wars, yet he was never meant to be officially revealed as the man behind the black mask. His identity was eventually leaked by Mark Hamill in an interview in 1983:
Bob Anderson was the man who actually did Vader’s fighting. It was always supposed to be a secret, but I finally told George I didn’t think it was fair any more. Bob worked so bloody hard that he deserves some recognition. It’s ridiculous to preserve the myth that it’s all done by one man. – Mark Hamill
It was announced by the British Academy of Fencing that Bob Anderson Died on new years day. The condolences of everybody here at TGF goes to his family and friends, we also want to extend our unending gratitude for the fantastic work he did throughout his life.

In memory of his lifetime of outstanding work, here he is in his most Iconic role:
