Nintendo announced DLC plans for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in a new video featuring producer Eiji Aonuma. The $20 expansion pass includes bonus treasure chests as well as a hard mode and new dungeon. The expansion pass is available on both the Wii U and Nintendo Switch versions of the game.
Additional content will be distributed three times over the course of the year. Three bonus chests will be added on March 3. According to Nintendo these chests will contain useful items as well as an exclusive Nintendo Switch shirt for Link to wear in-game. This summer the game will add a hard mode, an additional Cave of Trials challenge and a new map feature. The final content pack launches Holiday 2017 and will introduce a new dungeon and story content. The DLC packs will not be sold separately outside of the expansion pass.
In the video Aonuma said that the goal was to provide players with “a place to play, explore, and enjoy for a long time.” The Breath of the Wild expansion pass continues Nintendo’s recent trend of providing DLC for its games. Splatoon, Mario Kart 8, and Hyrule Warriors all received significant content updates after launch.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild launches on March 3, 2017 for Nintendo Switch and Wii U. In development since 2013, it is the first original Zelda game developed in HD and the first original console game in the series since 2011’s Skyward Sword. Breath of the Wild will be the last game released for the Wii U according to Nintendo executives
