Talking about The Last of Us film is a double-edged sword, I mean really… ask anyone! At one point in time, we (the fans of the game) thought while playing the game for the first time, “The Last of Us would be an amazing movie!” But now after we’ve played through the story one, two, or maybe even fifteen times, played the DLC, and watched every ending interpretation video possible, that The Last of Us does not need a movie… especially a movie that will (attempt to) tell the same story as the game.
According to most recent reports about The Last of Us film, the movie is in fact an adaptation of the game. After the BAFTA’s, where Naughty Dog took home 5 awards for The Last of Us, Neil Druckmann confirmed to IGN that the movie will take on the same storyline as the successful PlayStation 3 title.
“It’s an adaptation of the story of The Last of Us … As far as where we go and how we make it fit into a film, how it takes into account the unique properties of film… We’re not sure yet. We’re only just scratching the surface.” – Neil Druckmann
As much as we (trust Neil’s writing abilities and) love Ellie and Joel, we don’t need to see their story recreated onto the big screen… we just don’t. Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker conveyed the emotion between the two characters so perfectly, that putting two Hollywood stars in their place just wouldn’t feel… as original, as raw, or as real. I wouldn’t mind seeing a new set of characters in the same post-pandemic world, or even the fall of the world and how it all began… but sadly, I doubt we’d ever see that. All we as fans can do is hold out hope that the movie will not ruin the game for us, and that it will stay true to the beauty that is The Last of Us.
