John Carmack, co-founder of id Software and famed programmer on titles like Doom and Quake, has left the studio to focus on his role as chief technical officer at Oculus VR. Oculus VR is responsible for developing the partially crowd-funded Oculus Rift, a head-mounted virtual reality device not yet released to the public.
According to Polygon, id Software and Bethesda Softworks released the following statement regarding Carmack’s resignation:
“John Carmack, who has become interested in focusing on things other than game development at id, has resigned from the studio.” John’s work on id Tech 5 and the technology for the current development work at id is complete, and his departure will not affect any current projects. We are fortunate to have a brilliant group of programmers at id who worked with John and will carry on id’s tradition of making great games with cutting-edge technology. As colleagues of John for many years, we wish him well.”
Carmack had this to add via his Twitter account:
I wanted to remain a technical adviser for Id, but it just didn’t work out. Probably for the best, as the divided focus was challenging.
Carmack has acted as chief technical officer for Oculus Rift since August, and was an avid supporter of the device as early as last year.
id Software’s president and former CEO, Todd Hollenshead, resigned from the company back in June to pursue other interests.
