Looks like it was a slow month for buying games. As always, Nintendo came out on top with it’s famous console and handhelds. For some apparent reason, people are still buying the Playstation 2. The Xbox 360 finally took a lead over the Playstation 3. Here are the official stats:
PlayStation 2 41.6K
PlayStation 3 276.9K
PSP 100.1K
Xbox 360 332.8K
Wii 465.8K
Nintendo DS 422.2K
As far as software goes, Nintendo also took the lead with it’s remade classics and fitness game. Microsoft should be quite pleased, since Sony only has Modern Warfare 2 to be on the list. Bioware should be jumping with glee because it just became the fastest January release of all-time.
“Previously the best selling January release was NFL Street for the PS2 in 2004, selling a little over 325,000 units in its first month. Typically, January sales are reserved for the overflow from the Holidays and whilst the industry has come to the conclusion long ago that games can succeed in the off-season, few publishers have dared to release a big AAA title in the January month since 2005 (Resident Evil 4 for the GameCube, January 2005,” EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich told Industry Gamers.
“Clearly, the success of three new releases, Mass Effect 2, Army of Two, and Darksiders is unequivocal proof that publishers should not avoid a January release date for their core targeted AAA titles,” he added.
