iPhone OS 4.0 Gets Multi-Tasking, Game Center, and More

It seems like a great time to be a iPhone user. If you were unable to grab any news for the iPhone today, well my friend, you came to the right place.

Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, and others held a press conference introducing their newest operating system, 4.0

If you currently have an iPhone, you would know that you probably could not use a certain app, then switch over to another app on the fly, while still on that first app. Thanks to the wonderful (and late) minds at Apple, the makers were able to create a way to multi-task and still manage to keep your battery strong.

You think that’s all they wanted to talk about? Oh, no.

Are you the type of person who just have to have all of the apps in the iTunes store? Every time you go to an app, you have to search around for it? Not anymore. Another addition to the new update, will consist of folders. Basically, you drag one app on top of another, then another, and so on. Once you are done with that, you have automatically created a folder. This would be great for those of us who likes to buy games. Remember that limit that allowed only 180 apps at a time? Well, it has been bumped up to over 2,000.

Other things like enchaned e-mail, iBooks, and an advertising service are included as well.

Question is, why did we really post this article? It’s quite simple: Game Center.

The Game Center for the iPhone will basically be a social network. Don’t think of this as Facebook or MySpace. Instead, think of it as your personal Xbox Live, just for Apple. While bragging about their new network, they thought it was only right to take shots at Nintendo and Sony.

“Gaming is extremely popular on the iPhone and iPod touch. We have 50,000 games. Let’s compare that to the competition … the PSP and DS … we blow them out of the water.

Any true gamer knows that not all 50,000 games on the iPhone and iPod touch is to the quality of it’s competitors, but we can admit that is a pretty decent number. And besides, they don’t have the social network. Speaking on that, Game Center looks to include game invites, achievements, match making, messaging and leaderboards. That is a lot for a little device, don’t you think?

You know the sad part? Apple only revealed 7 of the 100 features that they will deliver. We will keep you informed of what you can expect next.

Expect the update to drop this summer for all users of the iPhone 3Gs and 3rd-gen iPod Touch. iPhone 3G and 2nd-gen iPod Touch users will get the update too, but some features, like multi-tasking, will not work. iPad users should get this update in the fall.

We want to thank Engadget, for attending the press conference, and feeding us with the juciy news. Leave your comments and tell us what you want to see, or can’t wait for.
