Halo: The Master Chief Collection Multiplayer Ranking System Explained

Earlier this week, developer 343 Industries chatted with the folks over at IGN and shared some key details on the multiplayer ranking system for Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

In speaking of how the studio planned to handle an intricate ranking system that would span four different multiplayer experiences, a representative of 343 Industries said, “Each playlist within Halo: The Master Chief Collection uses an independent skill-based ranking system that is identical to the leveling system from the original Halo 2.”

The representative went on to state, “The system uses the same exact XP requirements as the original Halo 2; players will earn XP when they win and lose XP when they lose, and total XP will determine their rank. You will have a skill-based ranking per each playlist; we ultimately decided not to have a ‘master’ ranking across all four games combined, given that player skill and approach varies radically between game chapters.”

Overall, the studio had decided that skill detection would work best when matchmaking. As such, this would result in “[placing] players into the fairest matches faster than any Halo game to date.”

For those players who would rather avoid full-on competitive matches, the representative dropped the news that “Social matches will also be available for players who prefer a more relaxed play experience.”

Halo: The Master Chief Collection is coming to Xbox One on November 11th. Be sure to head over here for more coverage and drop a comment below with your thoughts on the ranking system within the game.
