Half-Life 3 Patent Filed, Could Possibly Be in Development

Fans of the Half-Life series have been stringed around about the next iteration to the series since Half-Life 2 in late 2004, but there’s finally some proof that Half-Life 3 might be in the works. Valve has always been adamant about denying rumors of there being a Half-Life 3 in development, but on September 29th a trademark for Half-Life 3 was filed by Valve in Europe at the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market, Europe’s equivalent for trademark and designs registry.

The trademark is owned by Valve, but wasn’t filed by them. Instead it was filed on their behalf by Casalonga & Associates. Casalonga & Associates is a patent and trademark firm and the trademark covered “computer game software”, “downloadable computer game software via a global computer network and wireless devices”, and other goods and services. So far no trademark has been filed in the USPTO.

It should be noted that this doesn’t necessarily mean that Half-Life 3 is in development, but it could just be Valve protecting their franchise from being used by anyone else.

Any thoughts? Do you think this is just Valve playing hard to get again with Half-Life 3, or could it mean that Half-Life 3 is closer than expected?
