Grand Theft Auto V Makes A Lot of Money

In its first day of sales, Rockstar’s latest makes $800,000,000. In case you’re keeping track, that’s more than any Grand Theft Auto game, or any Take-Two and Rockstar have made to date. We knew Rockstar was going big with Grand Theft Auto V, and so are gamers.

It also marks a new day one record for any software sales. The record was previously held by last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops II, which set the mark at $500 million.  That clears the previous record by $300 million, which is even more than it took to develop the game. That sum is $265 million, and only one production was more expensive: Disney’s Pirates of the Carribean: At World’s End.

Take-Two is riding high on the news, lauding Rockstar’s opus.

“Once again, the team at Rockstar Games have outdone themselves, setting the entertainment industry’s new standard for creativity, innovation and excellence. Beginning at midnight on Monday, consumers around the world gathered in anticipation to be among the first to experience the evolution of this remarkable series. In North America alone, more than 8,300 stores opened their doors at midnight to welcome fans whose loyalty and enthusiasm were rewarded with what The New York Times called ‘the most immersive spectacle in interactive entertainment’. We are incredibly proud of Rockstar Games‘ creative achievement and could not be more pleased with the success of this launch.”

Grand Theft Auto V released September 17 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The game will release in Japan October 10.
