Google Wants To Inspire Female Coders With ‘Wonder’

In an ongoing effort to inspire the next generation of female coders, Google’s Made with Code initiative has released a new project “for wonder women everywhere to add coding to their superpower toolkit.”

In conjunction with the release of Warner Bros.’ new Wonder Woman film, Google wants to get new females interested in coding by coding three scenes from the film using introductory principals like variables, sequences, loops, and conditionals.

The three levels of coding require plenty of patience and effort; novice coders drag and drop blocks into place, press play, and watch as Diana leaps into action. If you run into a situation where you just can’t get a solution, a “Help” icon in the top right corner will show a working example which you can then restart and learn how to get to the correct solution, or if necessary just move on to the next challenge.

“Wonder Woman’s strength is more relevant today than ever”, Google Play’s Mathilde Cohen Solal wrote in a announcement on their blog. “Especially in the technology space, since girls are less likely than the boys to be encouraged to pursue computer science and only 22 percent of gaming developers are women.”

Users can share their codes via social media and then try out other Made with Code projects or take on more challenging projects with Code Studio, Scratch, and Mozilla Thimble.

This is a fantastic first step for those looking to get into coding by using a fantastic and fun movie to help nurture those users. If the film and Wonder Woman in general has done anything, it is to inspire females that they can do anything if they set their mind to it, and Google is just offering one more tool for those wanting to expand their skills.
