Gears of War 4: Setting Up The New Trilogy

Gears of War 4

In a recent interview with Game Informer, Gears of War 4‘s creative director Chuck Osieja and studio head Rod Fergusson talk about setting up the foundations for a bigger Gears of War universe.

A few days ago we shared the new images that the folks at The Coalition released about their jewel-in-progress, Gears of War 4. Since then, the studio has been busy disclosing fresh information concerning the setting and the main characters of their new game (check out this breakdown).

The last addition to the teaser menu has been a juicy interview that Game Informer held recently with creative director Chuck Osieja and studio head Rod Fergusson. In just four minutes, they hint to the storytelling schemes they will follow for their next games. And they are aiming high.

Gears of War 4: From the Classic Tone to a New Era of Storytelling

Gears of War 4 is moving forward, stepping inside a universe that is known to the fans of the saga while opening possibilities never seen before. This mixture between familiarity and novelty seems to pervade across different elements of this new title.

For example, the action will still happen in the fictional planet of Sera although we won’t be anymore under the Coalition of Ordered Governments, or COG, but accompanying a splinter faction called the Outsiders. This will give us the chance to explore the other side to the establishment, not turning the COG as enemies but perhaps relating to them as adversaries. One of the protagonists will be JD Fenix, son of the legendary Marcus Fenix. He surely has a lot to offer regarding how the young generations see the course of events and how they react to them.

Talking about characters: one of the things The Coalition wanted to avoid was the creation of archetypes. In the previous CoD games, characters were more related to a band-of-brothers kind of military feeling than anything else. Gears 4 wants to go beyond that and offer deeper relationships created before the events that unfold, making this new line-up of heroes something more human and complex than before.

Gears of War 4

As for the tone of this game, they already confirmed that Gears 4 is bringing back the horror and survival. In this interview Rod Fergusson confirms the short span of time that the game will cover. It will start with the attack of an Outsiders’ village during twilight and continue with a nocturnal skirmish, culminating in the morning with a shocking end. During this night journey, surprise and discovery will be the key.

And considering how much stress they are putting on the trilogy discourse, expect a huge cliffhanger at the end of it all.

Gears of War 4 is coming this fall. There is already an open beta in the works for the multiplayer mode starting this April so head to their website to know more. And of course, stay tuned to The Game Fanatics, as we will be covering everything Gears of War related!
