In a shocking announcement on Twitter and Facebook yesterday, GameTrailers stated it will be closing its virtual doors after a 13-year run.
GameTrailers.com was launched in 2002 and was a pioneer in the world of online game journalism becoming known for its video reviews, voice over work, and wide selection of original series. In 2014, GameTrailers was purchased by Defy Media, which preceded to lay off much of the staff at GT. After continued layoffs into 2015, the announcement still came as a surprise.
Former Associate Editor Ben Moore posted on NeoGAF that GameTrailers’ closing was completely unexpected. “I just wanted to confirm that GameTrailers is shutting down officially today,” Moore said. “Everyone is being let go. We all found out mere hours ago, so we’re still reeling a bit.”
It’s never a good sign with industry staples being let go in such a fashion. GameTrailers helped shaped online game journalism, and it’s undoubtedly upsetting to see to them gone. We wish the best to them.
