Flashback Malware infecting Macs

Generally, virus scares are limited to Windows-based computer. Not because Apple’s computers are unhackable, but simply due to market share. However, a new strain of malware has been infecting Macs, which means that Apple users finally get to join in on the fun. It is estimated that over 600,000 computers across the globe have been infected. The virus is known as BackDoor.Flashback.39. Computers get infected via websites with the virus’ code on them that makes use of a java applet to infect the computer. Flashback was first discovered in September 2011, but is now finally reaching prominence. The virus controls applications running on the computer, and also captures personal data and then sends it to a remote location.

According to Apple’s web page:

“A Mac isn’t susceptible to the thousands of viruses plaguing Windows-based computers. That’s thanks to built-in defenses in Mac OS X that keep you safe, without any work on your part.”

Seems to ring a bit hollow now. I suppose it was inevitable that someone would make a virus for OS X, given Macs recent rise in popularity. I have been working on computer for a long time (I am an IT consultant) and I have fought many viruses. Most fall to the same combination of RKill and a good antivirus (like Malwarebytes), but I have never fought a virus on a Mac. It would definitely be an interesting challenge. For now, Mac users need to be careful about where the go to, although any site could be infected (not ours). Stay tuned for any updates regarding this interesting incident.
