A new trailer for Godzilla: Resurgence (Japanese title: Shin Gojira, literally True Godzilla) has arrived and it looks awesome.
The trailer gives fans a first look at the new Godzilla suit in action. Pictures of the suit were leaked in January of this year featuring a new, more menacing looking monster. This looks like to be an attempt to capture the more frighting, force-of-nature creature, rather than the family friendly giant super hero of the 1970s.
The film GMK: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack also tried to do the same thing by casting Godzilla as a villain, rather than a hero. While we get plenty of monster and military footage, there’s no hint of the story. We see military types in offices talking, yet their audio is kept silent as haunting music plays instead.
This version of Godzilla is being brought to life by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, two of the creative minds being the hit Anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. These guys seem perfect for the job, since the Anime series was heavily influenced by Kaiju films. In 2012, Anno directed a short film titled A Giant Warrior Descends on Tokyo, which featured a giant creature attacking a city. The monster in question was designed by Hayao Miyazaki and based on a character from the film Valley of the Wind. It was the first live action short produced by Studio Ghibli. With that said, this movie looks to be in good hands.
This is the 29th Godzilla filmed by Toho studios, not counting the two produced in the states, and a third one coming in 2020 featuring King Kong. While the American versions of Godzilla have utilized CGI to depict the giant monster, Toho has chosen to keep with tradition and use traditional effects. However, Godzilla doesn’t move much in the trailer, which means it might not be controlled solely by a man inside a suit.
