The very first official Assassin’s Creed movie trailer just leap of faithed its way onto the internet.
Set to Kanye’s “I Am A God” from 2013, the trailer shows that while this movie takes place within the universe Ubisoft created with their hit game series, it isn’t based on any of the prior games and instead opts for it’s own plot, set during the Spanish Inquisition, and designs while still including the assassins, Templars, the Animus, and Abstergo.
Yes, the Templar-led company makes an appearance and can boast of having Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Irons among their ranks. Similar to the very first Assassin’s Creed game, they are using the Animus and kidnapped descendants of assassins to look back in time for information. The Animus, instead of being a bed-type piece of equipment, seems to be more based on a full motion VR machine. The scenery and fight/parkour choreography are VERY Assassin’s Creed; Michael Fassbender is even shown having dual hidden blades being secured to his wrists.
Here’s the official synopsis:
“Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.”
There are a few concerning bits: such as the excessive CG at times and the fact that video game movies not having the best track record but I’m interested in seeing how the movie turns out; it has just enough tweaks to where the story could be new and exciting. At the very least the movie should fill the void left by there not being a new game this year.
Assassin’s Creed hits theaters on December 21, 2016.
