Far Cry Primal is Releasing a Free Survival Mode in Two Weeks

Far Cry Primal

Ubisoft is bringing on April 12th a new survival mode for their latest hit, Far Cry Primal. It comes with bigger challenges and new features — and the best part, it’s for free!

Last February Far Cry Primal arrived to the stores of the world with the aim of revamping one of Ubisoft’s most famous sagas. This regression took a big jump indeed and brought us directly into the Stone Age. To a place that makes us wonder but also shudder, full with primitive resources and evocative environments. While acknowledging some of the lacks of this particular title, there is no doubt that Ubisoft has accomplished great things with this latest Far Cry version. Their effort has not gone unnoticed by critics and gamers alike, quite on the contrary.

Now the French studio has announced that they will add to the experience and launch a survival mode completely free this April 12. It will do so for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The latter is getting 4K textures on top.

In words of director Thomas Simon, it’s the answer offered by the development team to some of the desires expressed by the community.

Far Cry Primal’s Survival Mode in a Primitive Nutshell

In this mode, permadeath is probably the biggest addition to the gameplay. This means that we will be out of the game the first time we die (except in the vision missions since, well, they are not really happening in reality). With it they are bringing a stamina gauge for Takkar. Running and hunting like there is no tomorrow pays now a toll since our protagonist will grow slower and weaker as the gauge runs out. As with other games, we will need to find a secure spot to sleep a little and replenish our energies.

The minimap will also be turned off, pushing players to pay more attention to the environment in order to navigate correctly through the wilderness. You remember those times when visiting different points of a map was convenient due to fast travel? Our surviving ancestors did not and Far Cry Primal’s survival mode will reflect this. Takkar is also getting more sensitive to elements and he will not longer command his owl over foes or craft ammo instantaneously.

Other changes have to do with the animal kingdom of this particular Stone Age. Taming creatures will be more complicated and the permadeath element will also touch all our furry companions we have befriended along the way.

[blockquote cite=”Thomas Simon, Far Cry Primal’s Game Director”]The keystone of that survival mode is the change in the exploration, crafting and difficulty of the game to make it even more realistic. After that, there are options the player can activate to go further.[/blockquote]

It’s not the first time that the folks at Ubisoft release free content for the game. They already did so right during launch, with the addition of the so-called Expert Mode. It lowered Takkar’s health and increased enemy attack speed. It could well be that Ubisoft is preparing other improvements for the game in the near future. We would love to see, for example, more additions to mission types and the narrative aspects of the title, which concentrate the majority of complaints still these days. But of course we will need to wait and see.
