In a recent Twitter query, Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Worldwide Studios, mentioned that users who wanted to turn off the light bar on the Dualshock 4 would find it a bit difficult. That is mainly due to the fact that users would not be able to turn it off at their own whim.
The light bar on the PS4 Dualshock 4 controller tracks movement much like the PlayStation Move controller. With the wand-like controller users were not able to turn off the light for obvious reasons, so it’s no surprise that this time around users of the controller won’t be able to turn the light on and off at their own volition.
Developers would be able to change the light for their game much like with the PlayStation Move. In fact, Killzone: Shadow Fall is integrating a red light with the health of the player.
At least with the Dualshock 4 there isn’t a prominent bulb like design at the tip of the controller like with the PlayStation Move controller, so it shouldn’t interfere with gamers’ ability to play without being distracted. And with the Dualshock 4 the light source is located where the trigger buttons are, pointing away from the player so the player shouldn’t be bothered by a blinding blue light shining on their face.
I’m pretty sure the developers of the controller took the light bar into consideration when thinking about battery life, so I don’t think that should be an issue with the Dualshock 4. Any thoughts on the “always on” light bar?
