Dress Up Your PS4 With Sony's 'Project SkyLight'

Sony announced at the PlayStation Experience that you’ll soon be able to replace the shiny black faceplate on your PS4 with one bearing images of your favorite Sony characters. So now we know why your faceplate can just come off if you pull on it.

Codenamed ‘Project SkyLight,’ it’s the first console customization initiative we’ve seen from Sony since the launch of the PS4. If you’re willing to shell out $24.99, you can put LittleBigPlanet‘s Sackboy and friends on your PS4, or if you’re willing to stick a bunch of characters from a game you haven’t had the chance to play yet on your console, there is also a faceplate for The Order: 1886.

Now these are only two faceplates, with the promise of more to come, and they’re being made in very small quantities, so if the thought of making your PS4 either friendlier and more lighthearted, or grimmer and more foreboding, appeals to you, you had better snatch them up while you can.

A video posted on PlayStation’s YouTube channel, a short instructional segment on how to replace the faceplate, is more or less straightforward. Essentially, pull the old thing off, put the new thing on. It does demonstrate the strangely long amount of time it takes to turn off the PS4 properly, though. Honestly, that seems like the most time-consuming portion of the process.

The article posted on the PlayStation Blog also mentions that more designs will be announced in the near future, and that they were “planning a few other fun enhancements to this personalization initiative and will have more to share soon.” One can only imagine what other “enhancements” they have planned, but in the meantime feel free to yank bits off your PS4 in speculation of what might be replaceable. (Note: Don’t actually do that.)

It’s nice to see that Sony is adding something to brighten up the PS4. At this time, only three different colors of PS4 exist: Matte black, arctic white, and the “classic grey” of the 20th Anniversary edition. None are particularly lively colors, so a faceplate would be a nice touch. Particularly if customizable faceplates are in the future.

Let’s turn the conversation to the comments. Any thoughts on ‘Project Skylight’? Any “enhancements” you have in mind for the PS4? What about the idea of customizable faceplates, any designs you feel would be worthy to grace your PS4? Or is it just a silly mess that serves no real purpose other than to take your money from your pockets?
