Double Dragon IV: the Beat Em’ Up Classic Confirms Its Game Modes

A week away from launch day, January 30th on PC and PS4, Arc System Works confirmed all of Double Dragon IV’s game modes and characters involved. At the same time, they hinted that new faces are joining the retro Beat Em’ Up classic’s roster.

The Double Dragon series reached its 30th anniversary and is celebrating the continuation of the original story with the fourth chapter of the scrolling fighting game. The title will go back to the iconic 8-bit graphics that the first editions displayed in consoles like the Atari 7800 and the Nintendo Entertainment System.

The developer also announced three game modes. First comes the Story Mode, a follow-up of Double Dragon II: The Revenge‘s story, with the classic Billy and Jimmy duo (co-op available). There’s also 2p Duel Mode, with both unlockable allies and enemies from Story Mode. Finally, the challenging no-continues Tower Mode is back! The goal? Make it as far up the tower as you can, defeating all foes and gaining extra rewards.

There is a fourth and console exclusive game mode that makes use of the Share Play feature PlayStation offers. Furthermore, you will have the option to team up with a friend and throw punches together for up to one hour, even if they don’t own the game.

There’s many known faces from the saga in the character roster, including recurrent enemies like Abobo, Burnov, and Right Arm. Still, Arc System Works states that many new enemies will make an appearance, some of which boast unique special skills.

Even if the company is new to the series, many of the original developers are involved in Double Dragon IV. Among them are producer Takaomi Kaneko, character designer Koji Ogata, composer Kazunaka Yamane, programmer Kei Oyama, and director of the original trilogy Yoshihisa Kishimoto.

The release promises to be a nostalgic comeback for the classic saga fanatics. For more information, visit the game’s official website.
