When Diablo 3 was first announced for consoles, the only release it was officially seeing was PlayStation 3. Eventually, the Xbox 360 earned its trip to hell as well. The same scenario is happening when it comes to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Reaper of Souls, the game’s first expansion, releases today, and with it come questions about a console edition. The PS4 is already slated for the Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition featuring both the original game and its expansion, but an Xbox One version, while expected, remained unannounced. Videogamer.com was finally able to learn some details regarding a possible Xbox One release.
“I don’t know where we are with Microsoft right now so I can’t really comment on what that contract looks like,” said Alex Mayberry, lead producer for Diablo 3. “The point is we are developing for Xbox [One] and PS4 simultaneously. We hit those major platforms and then our goal as a development team is to make them run.”
As for when we can see a release for either console, Mayberry expects that to happen pretty soon, saying that “it’s not far off.”
All of this sounds a little bit too familiar, meaning all of this should (keyword should) result in a release of the Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition for both consoles. Yet as we all know, things can change. Should Microsoft miss out, that’d be a key exclusive for Sony.
We’ll press the matter in a few weeks when we visit the Blizzard both at PAX East.
