Crytek Developing Homefront 2; Video Cards Everywhere Weep

Homefront released to merely average reviews, but still it’s not too surprising to hear we’re getting a second Homefront after THQ declaring it a commercial success.

So what better way to improve on with the game’s sequel by having one of the premiere FPS developers out there work on it? Crytek, developers of Far Cry and the Crysis series, will be developing said sequel.

“We see Homefront as a really strong universe that has a lot of potential and that has been expertly created and marketed by THQ,” said Cevat Yerli, President, CEO, and Founder of Crytek. “We believe that bringing our level of quality, creativity and production values to the next Homefront title creates an opportunity for both THQ and Crytek to deliver a truly blockbuster game. It’s really important to us that THQ has the faith in giving us a lot of creative freedom over one of its most important properties to allow us to bring the Homefront world to life in a new and innovative way.”

THQ needed a new developer for the series after shutting down the studio behind the original. As for the decision to go with Crytek, well, it honestly was a no-brainer for THQ; they didn’t see anyone out there that matched up to their talent.

“Selecting Crytek to take Homefront forward underscores our strategy of working with the industry’s best talent,” said Danny Bilson, EVP Core Games, THQ. “Homefront’s unique setting and storyline captivated gamers the world over. With Crytek’s industry leading technology and legendary experience in the FPS genre, we’re supremely confident that the next Homefront will deliver that AAA-quality experience that players demand.”

Homefront 2 (working title) is due out sometime in during 2014’s fiscal year and will, presumably anyway, be available for consoles and PC. Also presumably, the game will be a complete graphical power house. Crytek is on the record as saying there’s not much more they can squeeze out of this current console generation, but it’ll be interesting to see what they can do with new PC hardware.
