In Case You Missed It – Week of October 17 to 23, 2016

*Yaaaaaaaaaawn* Oh boy, what day is it? … Monday?… Wait, what happened last week? Guess it’s time for another round of In Case You Missed It!

In case you’ve missed the other similarly titled articles, you’re reading In Case You Missed It, the weekly catch-up of last week’s news. Every week, we here at The Game Fanatics attempt to cover everything in the gaming world. Not everything gets covered, sadly, as there are only so many of us. (You can join the crew here if you would like to help out.) In the meantime, let’s talk about the things we didn’t get to. You know, ICYMI!

In Case You Missed Fan Games…

Fan games have had a bit of trouble with Nintendo lately, but let’s not forget that other games have those whose creativity is more than most. Developers Mr. Lange, Murasaki Fox, Tpot, and PicsAndPixels, for example, love Sonic games so much that they made their own! While Sega has had some issues when putting Sonic in a 3D environment, these fellows decided to make Sonic Utopia, which was debuted at SAGE 2016. It is free to download, though for how long is the real question…

In Case You Missed the Clip of Skyrim in the Switch…

Bethesda missed it, too. According to the Elder Scrolls developer, they are “happy to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Nintendo on the video. While we are not confirming any specific titles at this time, we are pleased to announce our partnership with Nintendo and support of the Switch.”  In other words, Skyrim isn’t actually confirmed for the Switch. That’s… not good news. Then again, Nintendo isn’t exactly stating what launch titles the Switch will have just yet. We’ll have to wait and see.

In Case You Missed the Massive DDoS Attack…

Yeah, that was a bit of a doozy. The DNS service Dyn–which hosts sites such as PayPal, the Apple App Store, Reddit, Twitter, and the New York Times–was attacked three times by DDoS attacks. Blizzard fans have been facing a few hiccups from DDoS attacks lately, but the assault on Dyn was unprecedented as the attack involved tens of millions of IP addresses through a botnet established through, of all things, web cameras. Can’t wait to see the movie they make out of this.

Imagine seeing this but in real life. That’s a DDoS attack.

In Case You Missed Hearthstone News on TGF…

Here’s a tidbit for ya! The Hearthstone World Championships are approaching, so Blizzard is hosting a fantasy-sports style event called “Choose Your Champion” for Hearthstone. Players can select a “champion” from the 16 pros going to BlizzCon from now until October 25 at 11:59 PM PDT (aka tomorrow at midnight). A second voting period will occur after Opening Week until November 3. For every match the champion wins, the player who voted for them will receive a free Grand Tournament pack, up to six packs. This includes a free participation pack, so why not?

In Case You Missed Talking About Microtransactions…

The NPD Group published a new survey that asked people of all kinds about their gaming habits. Specifically, they wanted to know about the gamer’s opinions on DLC and microtransactions. In the past three months, 28 percent of the 8,893 gamers surveyed from age 13-54 purchased some form of additional content. While there are plenty of stats for this study, one other curious thing from the survey is that 77 percent of those polled are totally okay with microtransactions (though some wish they were slightly more expensive than they should be).

That’s all for this week, folks! Tune in next time for what will probably be the spookiest In Case You Missed It yet!
