In Case You Missed It – December 19 – 25, 2016

If I had to guess, you were probably busy opening your Winter Loot Boxes in Overwatch and decking the halls to notice a lot of the gaming news this past week. Don’t worry, for I am here with another edition of In Case You Missed It!

In Case You Missed The Fine Print…

Check thy pre-orders. It turns out that Mass Effect: Andromeda will reach Xbox players first. For those not in the know, EA’s got a special deal with Microsoft that lets a lot of their games (see: Star Wars Battlefront, their sports franchises). The funny thing about this is that Bioware has specifically stated that Andromeda won’t have any special features for Project Scorpio, the Xbox One competitor to the PS4 Pro. So…get a normal Xbox One?

In Case You Missed the Obvious…

PC gaming is better than consoles. Economically speaking, of course! According to a recent report by SuperData, more gamers bought PC games than they did console versions. By a LOT. Like, almost $30 billion more. Neither, however, beat out mobile gaming, which drew in $40.6 billion this year. This is no doubt due to smash-hits like Pokemon GO and the ubiquity of smartphones. In less obvious news, the VR market did pretty okay, drawing in about $2.7 billion in revenue. Not a bad year for video games!

OOOOO, economics!
OOOOO, economics!

In Case You Missed the Return of Steam Sales…

You didn’t miss much. As soon as Steam launched their Winter Sale, the hacker group Phantom Squad decided to try and hack the Steam servers. They even announced they were doing so on Twitter! Luckily, they were unsuccessful in doing anything more than annoying Steam users for a few hours while the site was DDoSed. Oh, and they were suspended from Twitter for a while.

In Case You Missed Getting Presents in Skyrim…

Merry Christmas, have a mod! Nicolas Lietzau and SureAI, the folks who brought the Enderal mod for Skyrim, decided to drop a teaser for a new, DLC-sized expansion. Forgotten Stories will add a ton of previously-cut content to Enderal in addition to some new guild quests. The project will be free, just as Enderal is, and will be out sometime in 2017.

One last week is left in 2016. I hope you are all prepared for the very peculiar future that awaits us all! And remember, if you think you missed something important (or so completely trivial you would only hear about it from me), be sure to come back next week for another installment of In Case You Missed It!
