Taking only a record 16 days after its release on November 8th, Activision Blizzard announced Modern Warfare 3 has topped the $1 billion mark in worldwide sales. This great feat takes the record, dethroning James Cameron’s “Avatar”, which took 17 days! This was not the first record that Modern Warfare 3 has set. The game also has the record of earning $400 million in the first 24 hours and $775 million in the first five days.
Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, said in a statement that he is not surprised by the wonderful feat, and was quoted saying:
“Core gamers love it, as our stellar reviews show. But every year, new people are drawn into Call of Duty.”
Modern Warfare 3 is the newest entry in the Call of Duty franchise, beating out the first-month sales of its predecessor, Black Ops, by a whopping 7%! If this is a sign of things to come, Modern Warfare 3 may be one of the best selling games to date, it certainly is for games launched in 2011.
Not only has Modern Warfare 3 been excelling in the sales department, but it is also getting great reviews. The 2011 Spike TV Video Game Awards awarded Modern Warfare 3 – Best Shooter. It has also received high rankings from IGN (9/10), Game Informer (9/10), and Official Xbox Magazine (9.5/10).
