Day Two of C2E2. Three main things happened today. First, I saw a lot of cosplay and took many pictures, see below. Then, I went to DC’s State of the New 52 panel. Lastly, I interviewed David Brevik, the Creative Director for Marvel Heroes, the upcoming MMORPG. Also, I bought a stuffed moogle.
First, the cosplay. Bit different from what I saw last year. Hardly any Poison Ivys, a few Harleys/Jokers. Lots of Deadpool, which is appropriate given that his popularity is on the rise. To my pleasure, there was quite a bit of Borderlands cosplay. First thing I saw when walking in today was a very impressive Gaige with the XXX head. Quite a few bandits, Salvadors, Sirens and Moxxis. All quite well done. Also saw quite a few girls dressed up as Ramona from Scott Pilgrim, which was quite cool. Throw in the occasional Nightwing, and you’ve got a good mix. But by FAR, the most prevalent was Adventure Time. So many ‘bunny ears’ as my friend so eloquently puts it. Also, your usual allotment of Doctors.
The New 52 panel was pretty interesting, saw some cool covers, but really not much news that hasn’t been released to the public before. Tomasi spoke a bit about the Five Stage of Grief arc in Batman & Robin. Was good to hear that Carrie Kelly isn’t going anywhere, she’ll be around for a while. Will she be Robin? Unknown, but she’ll be in comics. Trinity War, DC’s big event will cross over between Justice League, Justice League of America, Justice League Dark, Constantine, Phantom Stranger and Pandora. Should be a very exciting event this summer.
Jonah Hex will be taking a trip through time to modern day Gotham (and Arkham). It will be interesting to see how a time displaced gunslinger deals with the challenges of modern day. Swamp Thing #22 starts a new creative team that will focus on shorter stories with a variety of topics and locations. They will be taking advantage of his ability to travel to anywhere through The Green. The first story will take place in Scotland with a tree that spouts delicious whiskey. John Constantine will be there, naturally. Green Lantern #20 will be a giant book, 88 pages and it will be an end of an era, a definite DO NOT MISS.
Marvel Heroes sounds like a very interesting and exciting game. It will be a combination of Diablo and X-Men Legends. It will feature a wide cast of characters with customizable skins and skill trees. For example, my Wolverine could be wearing the black and grey skin, and focus on lots of bleed damage, while yours could be wearing the yellow and brown costume and focus on health regen and tanking. It will feature a brand new story from Brian Michael Bendis and pose the question: What if Dr. Doom got the cosmic cube?
There will be three different types of zones. First, the normal town area where quests are given and items are crafted. Second are the instance dungeons, like in most MMOs. Lastly are the open combat areas where up to fifty characters can be fighting at a given time. These areas will also have random events, like Juggernaut attacking. It is these events that excite me most. Marvel Heroes will be free to play, with the ability to purchase shortcuts like skin and character unlocks. Look for it this June.
Until tomorrow, True Believers! Kupo!
