Why pay hundreds of dollars every month for cable and movie rentals when you have a game system capable of streaming nearly any TV show or movie for free, without commercial breaks? If you own a console and have high speed internet, then this applies to you. By using the custom PS3 browser, users can watch movies, television series, documentaries, cartoons, and anime.
However, not every video player works with a console browser. Using this guide, you will be able to find some of the video players that have been tested to work on the two major consoles: PS3 and 360.
The following websites are by far the best I’ve found. They provide easy navigation to what you are looking for and without the memberships, surveys, and pop ups.
FastPassTV
FastPassTV makes things simple and easy to navigate through, especially with the PlayStation 3 browser. When first loading up the site, you are presented with the choice of which type of media content you’re looking for. This option definitely speeds up the process and has you on your way in no time.
Once you pick your category, you’re presented with a dictionary-like setup that makes browsing through television shows and movies quite easy. It also means you can find pretty much whatever it is you’re looking for as well. Out of all of the streaming websites online, this is by far the easiest and most user friendly to date.
To get this to work on the 360 is a little less straight forward, and for more in-depth instructions, refer here.
ProjectFreeTV
ProjectFreeTV isn’t as simple and as user friendly as FastPassTV, but it gets the job done. While you’re automatically presented with a flurry of poorly coordinated colors upon entry, it’s easy to find what the top content being watched consists of, however, if you want something else, you’ll need to dig a little deeper.
Project Free does offer the chance to select categories and does offer a simple-to-use search function, but on an overall level, I don’t believe it offers as simple of functionality as FastPassTV. Thankfully, despite the poor design, once you’ve selected your category up top, you’re presented once more with a dictionary-like presentation and from there on, it’s as simple as any other website to use.
Standard Instructions
Once you’ve picked a show or movie to watch from FastPassTV or ProjectFreeTV, pick from the following video players (in order of quality/load times): VidX Den (FLV), WiseVid, Megavideo, Videoweed, and Novamov.
Note that MegaVideo only allows for 72 minutes of watch time, before asking you to become a member. If you use MegaVideo and your timer is up, you have to wait an hour and a half before getting another 72 minutes.
Also, for those wondering about the illegal content available through some of these sites, it’s a bit of a gray area when it comes to being a viewer of streaming content. While the MPAA will tell you it’s just as illegal as downloading (via torrent or P2P), copyright attorney Steve Englund says that those watching that material may not necessarily be guilty of anything.
“It is a little more complicated question whether it is illegal to watch it when someone else has put it online,” he said.
So just keep that in mind when browsing through all the new wonderful videos available through these sites. If you have any favorite sites that you know work for the PS3 browser, let us know about them in the comment section below.
