Assassin's Creed: Freedom Cry Getting Standalone Release

A piece of dowloadable content released for Assassin’s Creed IV will now be sold as a standalone experience. Ubisoft announced today that Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry will hit the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 on February 18th for $14.99, with a PC release coming a week later. Surprisingly, neither an Xbox One, Wii U, nor Xbox 360 release has yet been announced.

Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry focuses on Adewale, AC IV main character Edward Kenway’s second-in-command, who finds himself shipwrecked, without a crew, and focused on not only gathering his own crew, but escaping from slavers in Haiti, freeing as many fellow slaves as he can. The story takes place about 15 years after the events of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.

Tony Key, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Ubisoft, had this to say about the release:

“We decided to release Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry as a stand-alone game for both fans and newcomers to the Assassin’s Creed universe. Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry delivers key elements of an Assassin’s Creed game, including a new hero, new environments and new weapons.”

There’s no word yet on whether or not Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry is a timed console exclusive for Sony, and will thus make its way to Microsoft and Nintendo’s machines in the future. Sony also had 60 minutes of exclusive gameplay featuring Assassin’s Creed: Liberation star Aveline de Grandpré on both the PS3 and PS4.
