Anonymous Retaliates to Megaupload Being Shut Down

Infamous internet “hacktivist” group Anonymous has stepped up once again after the F.B.I. had the website shut down and its founder Kim Dotcom and three others arrested for copyright infringement. World quickly got out through the power of the internet and it seems many people have stepped up.

According to one of Anonymous‘ Twitter accounts (there are many), more than 27,000 computers are involved in the currently on-going attacks and 5,635 people are “confirmed” to be using LOIC, a computer application developed by hackers at the popular website 4Chan that when used in large numbers generates DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks. This is said to be by far the largest attack they’ve done.

So far, a number of websites have been taken down and more are planned to brought down through the night. The websites that are down are FBI.gov, Justice.gov, RIAA.org, and UniversalMusic.com. MPAA.org was attacked, but has since come back online. The number of websites is expected to climb, but no one from Anonymous has said what websites or how many websites are expected to go down.
