Nintendo will launch a SNES Classic Edition later this year according to a report from Eurogamer.
The news comes after Nintendo ended production on the NES Classic Edition. According to Eurogamer’s sources, the new plug-and-play console is already in development. The reasoning for the surprise cancellation of the NES Classic is, apparently, the development of the SNES Classic. Eurogamer reports that the console is intended to launch in time for the holiday season.
If the reception of the NES Classic Edition is any indication, the SNES version could be the hot toy this holiday. Retailers sold out of consoles almost immediately, and online resellers could often sell them for huge profits. Hopefully, Nintendo has learned from the supply issues that plagued the NES Classic Edition and can avoid them this time around.
The SNES, or Super Nintendo Entertainment System, was the follow up to the NES. Launched in 1991 the console would go on to sell nearly 50 million units in its lifetime. The console is home to several games that are often considered some of the best of all time. Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Final Fantasy III (or VI outside the US), Donkey Kong Country, and Chrono Trigger all called the platform home.
