In Case You Missed It – Week of September 26 – October 2, 2016

Firewatch

Welcome back to In Case You Missed It, the weekly news roundup from the gaming world! (Except for last week. Oops!)

I hope you’ve been on the edge of your seat for a while, because I’ve got quite a few interesting news clips from the past week. Let’s dive in.

In Case You Missed Digital Homicide Suing People…

You’ll be sad to hear that Digital Homicide has committed digital suicide. Early last week, the indie developer and, to some, scourge of Steam Greenlight announced that they will be shutting their doors due to financial constraints. Maybe suing over 100 Steam Users for harassment in addition to a separate suit against games critic Jim Sterling might have had something to do with that.

In Case You Missed YouTube’s Attempt to Be Twitch…

Get ready for the reverse. Starting last weekend, Twitch will now be allowing streamers and others to upload videos to the website. According to the blog post, users will be able to submit files up to 10 GB large, videos can be uploaded in 1080p and at 60 FPS, and you can download past Broadcasts to edit and re-upload. In other words, Twitch users won’t need YouTube! Will this work? Well, YouTube Gaming has faded into the background a bit, so…

In Case You Forgot that Amazon Owns Twitch…

You might be surprised, then, to find that Amazon is also making games. Breakaway is a “4 vs 4 mythological sport brawler built for fast action, teamwork, and live-streaming.” New World will be “a massively-multiplayer, open-ended sandbox game set in a living, cursed land” and will feature “deep Twitch integration with broadcaster-led events, achievements, and reward.” Finally, Crucible is a 6v6 competitive third person shooter with a Hunger-Games-style twist that has only one player victorious. Oh, and a 13th player can broadcast and alter the game as its being played. If you haven’t noticed yet, all three of these games have some sort of connectivity with Twitch, so you might not have to wait long to find these games popping up on the TGF Twitch channel.

In Case You Thought Being a Girl Scout was All About Sewing…

Get ready to feel some heartstrings being tugged! Last Saturday, the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles partnered up with Women in Games International and Sony’s Santa Monica Studio to help young girls learn about the video game industry, game design, and get an opportunity to create their own games. And, of course, they got a badge to go with it.

In Case You Were Wondering if a Good Video Game Movie will Ever Be Made…

We might be getting somewhere. Firewatch, a narrative-driven “walking simulator” game that released last February, just got picked up by Good Universe. The game has sold over one million copies since its release to decent reviews. Good Universe, on the other hand, is most notable for their work on… Neighbors and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising?

And that’s a wrap, folks! Be sure to check back next week for more In Case You Missed It!
