GET OVER HERE! – Mortal Kombat X Revealed

Mortal Kombat X has been announced with a Trailer titled ‘Who’s Next?’ via NetherRealm Studios

This will be the first new installment in the Mortal Kombat series since their critically acclaimed 2011 entry, and the first official confirmation since actor Kiefer Sutherland let it slip that he would be involved with the upcoming title a couple months back.

Scorpion MKX
Arguably the best looking Scorpion we’ve seen!

The trailer itself features series veterans Scorpion and Sub-Zero dueling in a classic looking fighting stage in the midst of a darkened icy forest. On a visual level it looks absolutely fantastic and the character animations are flawless, however with most trailers these days and especially with recent releases like Watch_Dogs consumers are considerably more wary when it comes to CG vs actual gameplay. Featured music in the trailer is an original track by Wiz Khalifa titled “Can’t Be Stopped“, a step away from the synonymous sounds of techno from yesteryear, but a choice that works well and as quite a minimalist piece allows the actual fighting to overload the senses without distracting.

“Fueled by next-gen technology, Mortal Kombat X combines unparalleled, cinematic presentation with dynamic gameplay to create an unprecedented Kombat experience.” – NetherRealm Studios

X-Ray moves make a welcome return to the franchise

Mortal Kombat X sees the return of the X-Ray moves which were introduced in the last installment but will also let players to choose between multiple versions of the characters, allowing a more varied and expanded move-set than previously seen.

In addition we see scenery interaction which isn’t just reduced to arena fatalities, a feature which was originally used in NetherRealm Studios latest DC Comics themed fighter Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Being built for the new generation of consoles there will also be an emphasis on online connectivity with a promise of “a new fully-connected experience that launches players into a persistent online contest where every fight matters in a global battle for supremacy.”

Mortal Kombat X is due for release in 2015 on most major platforms – PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Windows, however this is another high profile release that will be absent on Wii U, maybe not surprising given Nintendo’s core target audience and that the last Mortal Kombat titles released on their systems were way back in 2007 (Mortal Kombat: Armageddon for Wii and Ultimate Mortal Kombat for Nintendo DS)

This is likely the first of a series of Trailers to be released in the upcoming months before the game’s release, and while we have only had a glimpse of the potential for carnage in Mortal Kombat X we can safely say that the exposure so far has left us ‘Toasty!
