The option to buy digital games for others could be coming to the Xbox One after launch.Via Reddit this week, Microsoft‘s Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb suggested that the console could eventually support digital game-gifting. When asked, “Can I buy a game and gift it to a friend digitally?,” Major Nelson responded, “Great feature we’d like to add in someday, but it won’t be there at launch.” No further information was given.
The concept of game-gifting should not be confused with family-sharing, a feature that was originally planned for the Xbox One but revoked amidst Microsoft’s drastic policy changes back in June. Game-gifting, currently offered by platforms like Steam and Wii U, does not include the option to distribute previously owned titles, only titles purchased for the strict purpose of gifting. There’s no word yet on how Microsoft might handle the feature.
