A few weeks back, rumors of a first-person perspective in Rockstar’s upcoming next-gen remake of Grand Theft Auto V were lingering upon the tips of every gamer’s tongue. Today, Rockstar has confirmed those rumors.
In an exclusive hands-on with the game, Rob Nelson, animation director at Rockstar North told IGN, “It’s a very intense, in-your-face experience… literally. Obviously, we felt like one of the most compelling things you could do to make an experience people have had before feel different was the new first-person mode.”
Nelson noted that the appeal of a first-person perspective had also been on the studio’s minds, though it would never become a reality when Grand Theft Auto V originally launch on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 last year.
In Nelson’s words, “We were too busy working on our third-person controls and the missions. We were out of memory on the old consoles for animations. We were constantly fighting about what we could have and what we could still push in, and what other areas you could steal memory back from – audio, art, maps – for animation. So we could’ve added all the atoms to make a first-person mode to the level we wanted. We weren’t sure the world would have held up the way we would’ve wanted it to.”
Rockstar also commented on additional features, claiming, “…we’ve made a host of changes to accommodate this new perspective [in both the Single Player and Online], including the creation of an optional first person cover system, a new targeting system, a more traditional FPS control scheme, and integrating thousands of new animations into the existing game.”
What’s most impressive here is that the switch in perspectives is readily available at the tap of a single button, ensuring swift ease in transition between third-person and first-person.
“Alongside the new First Person mode, Grand Theft Auto V for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC features hundreds of additions and enhancements including 1080p resolution at 30FPS on PS4 and Xbox One (4K compatible on PC),” Rockstar added.

Grand Theft Auto V is coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on November 18th. The PC version is due to arrive early next year.
