Skullgirls the Steam Review

Skullgirls is a 2D fighting game that hit the market back in 2012. Over a year later, Skullgirls are now taking over Steam. Reverge Labs independently developed Skullgirls, which originally came out on PSN and XBLA. The fighting style is based from the Marvel vs Capcom 3 engine. Like most arcade fighting games, Skullgirls have a story, arcade and versus mode with eight characters to choose from. Skullgirls has received so much praise since their release on PSN and XBLA and now they are trying their hand at bringing Skullgirls to Steam.

First off, the best way to play Skullgirls on Steam is with a controller and not the keyboard. I tried both ways and found the game more enjoyable with a controller. Once I was connected I wanted to keep playing. The visuals are a mix between comic book and anime style which are very easy to the eyes. As mentioned before, the gameplay is based around Capcom’s Marvel vs Capcom 3. You have your hyper combos, teammate assists and tag team attacks. However not all battles are the same. In some cases it might be 1 versus 2.

Skullgirls comes equipped with twenty-eight original compositions by Michiru Yamane, Blaine McGurty, Brenton Kossak and Vincent Diamante. Yamane has also worked on Konami’s Castlevania series. The soundtrack to the game is available for purchase via iTunes. The music of Skullgirls is a jazz meets goth mixture and it does come together nicely. You can even hear a hint of Castlevania-type melody in the Skullgirls‘ score.

Like with any fighting game, there is some sort of story involved. Skullgirls takes place in Canopy Kingdom and has a 1940’s vibe. The objective is to obtain the Skull Heart which appears every seven years. The Skull Heart will grant one wish to one lucky woman. If the person with the wish is without a pure heart, the wish becomes corrupted and that woman will become the next Skullgirl.

Skullgirls is a lot of fun to play, especially if you enjoy fighting games. It is a new twist, using monstrous hair and deformed girls as fighters in the 1940’s. You have your choice of difficulty levels to challenge your fighting skills. Everything about this game works from the animation to the music. Skullgirls is available now on Steam as well as PSN and XBLA.

The Game Fanatics have in their possession one keycode for Skullgirls on Steam. This game can be yours very easily. All you have to do is comment below and answer the question, what would you wish for if you had the Skull Heart? Contest ends Monday at noon eastern! Make sure you leave your email or twitter handle so we can contact you if you are the lucky winner!
