Nintendo Announces the 2DS, Drops Wii U Price

Are you interested in the Nintendo 3DS, but not in the 3D aspect? Good news. In a surprise announcement, Nintendo has unveiled the 2DS, a handheld without the 3D, as well as without the clamshell design, of the 3DS. Instead, the 2DS (called an “entry level” handheld by Nintendo) will feature screens the same size of the original 3DS, as well as the ability to take 3D pictures, but without the ability to display in 3D.

The Nintendo 2DS will work with all 3DS and DS titles, and goes on sale October 12th for $130, which is cheaper than both the 3DS and 3DS XL. Kotaku quotes Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime as saying the device is focused on children and first-time gamers first and foremost, in an attempt to help parents be able to afford a handheld for each of their kids, but it’s obviously going to find adult supporters as well.

If that wasn’t enough, they’re also dropping the price of the Wii U to $299 for the deluxe version, including the now official Wind Waker HD bundle.

Obviously, with a recent PS Vita price cut and the upcoming Xbox One and PS4, Nintendo is gearing up to make itself more appealing to consumers this fall, undercutting the PS4 by $100 and the Vita by $70. It could prove to be a good move.
