AMD’s Korona Desktop Platform fused with Northbridge

AMD’s next generation high-end desktop platform named ‘Korona’ will fuse the processor silicon with the Northbridge entirely. Currently the ‘Scorpius’ platform which is on its way of being fully launched this year follow a slightly older platform layout of the processor with IMC, and a 2-chip chipset. Scorpius includes AMD’s upcoming ‘Zambezi’ processors and AMD’s 9-series desktop chipsets with a AM3+ sockets.  The Korona platform is due to be released sometime in 2012 and will consist of a new CPU architecture called ‘PileDriver’ that succeeds the yet to be released ‘Bulldozer’. Nothing is really known about PileDriver except that the first high-end CPU’s will be codenamed ‘Komodo’ and it will have a whopping 10 cores.

Since this will be a major release there’s almost certainty that the new Koronoa chips will not be using the AM3+ chipset but rather a brand new socket called FM2. Koronoa combines Komodo CPU’s with Hudson’s D4 Fusion Controller Hub or (FCH) which is just a fancy Southbridge.
