Yooka-Laylee Unveils Multiplayer with New Gameplay Trailer

If you’ve been missing playing games couch co-op style, then you’re in luck because the highly anticipated 3D platformer Yooka-Laylee has revealed that it will have local multiplayer and arcade mini-games.

The news comes from a multiplayer reveal trailer that Playtonic Games posted earlier this week. Check out all of the co-op craziness!

So…about that Yooka-Laylee Trailer

The trailer is really weird, but then again so is the game. At the beginning you meet a pixelated dinosaur named Rextro who introduces you to a game mode called “Rextro’s Radical Arcade.” As of right now there will be eight different multiplayer games available in this mode, and apparently they were all designed by that retro dino. The wacky mini-games look similar to a Fusion Frenzy style of gameplay, where players duke it out among themselves in some fairly precarious situations.

Rextro reveals the single player aspect of the arcade in the saddest way possible. He says “Play with friends! Or if not have any like Rextro, play single-player and beat high score!” Somebody please get this sad dinosaur some friends, he doesn’t deserve this!

Yooka-Laylee is being designed by some of the key creative talent behind the Donkey Kong Country and Banjo-Kazooie games; it’s sort of a spiritual successor to those retro titles. You play as Yooka (the green lizard dude) and Laylee (the bat with a big round nose) on a quest to stop an evil villain from absorbing all of the world’s books.

Yooka-Laylee

The game was crowdfunded on Kickstarter back in June of 2015. It raised a whopping £2.1 million and was backed by over 80,000 people. It holds the record for the most funded Kickstarter game in the UK of all time.

In the gameplay trailer we’re also told that this isn’t the final product of the arcade mode; it will look “much better” when Yooka-Laylee drops April 11, 2017 on PS4, Xbox One, Mac, and PC.
