Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap Coming To Retail

Wonder Boy

Headup Games and Nicalis have teamed up with DotEmu to release Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap at retail in early 2018 for Sony’s PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo Switch.

Both versions of the game will feature widescreen HD with an enhanced interface. Additionally it will introduce a new playable character: Wonder Girl. The retail version, much like the digital one, will let players toggle between the all-new hand-drawn visuals and the original graphics.

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is a remake of the original Sega Master System game Wonder Boy III. The game was originally released way back in 1989. The game is a Metroidvania-like title tells the story of a nameless hero who has been cursed and turned into a half-human, half-lizard monstrosity by the Meka Dragon. Players have to travel through Monster Land, avoiding traps and defeating enemies. In addition to traversing the many enemies you must ultimately find a cure.

In order to remake the game faithfully, they’ve reverse-engineered the original game to replicate every detail from the original. Enhanced in this version of the game are character movements, item drop logic and secret door locations.

Here’s what Headup Games founder, Dieter Schoeller, had to say about this partnership:

“The Wonder Boy saga on the Sega Master System was my personal Zelda when I was a little kid, and being able to give Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap the full physical retail treatment it deserves fills me with great joy. We’ve held the deepest respect for DotEmu and Nicalis, and are proud to collaborate with these two outstanding partners.”
