Wii U January Sales Take A Troubling Turn

NPD’s January sales figures show Wii U sales falling behind, with gamers favoring their current-gen hardware, even the original Wii in some cases.Actual numbers aren’t officially available, but Gamastura reports that a source claims the sales were “well under 100,000.” Software sales aren’t faring well, either, with even Wii versions of multiplatform games outselling their Wii U counterparts. Even Madden NFL 13 sold better on Sony’s notoriously troubled Vita handheld.

This news comes hot off the heels of two successful Nintendo Direct conferences, with Nintendo announcing a significant amount of first-party support for both 3DS and Wii U. This also follows the dissapointing announcement that the Wii U version of Ubisoft’s Rayman Legends is getting pushed to September.

So, with news this grim, should Wii U fans be worried? Don’t count on it. Nintendo has a solid plan, and are far from abandoning their system, especially one this early in its life cycle. Game releases will iron out, good games will come, and Nintendo is still adamant about working towards strengthening their online network. Plus, there’s a beautiful new Yoshi game coming, which is almost enough reason alone to make this Fanatic look pretty hard at the prospects of owning a Wii U in the near future.
